Serving Government: A Vital Policy Forum

The Institute has extensive experience as an important policy forum, sponsoring a variety of workshops, seminars, and discussion groups on both a classified and non-classified basis, held both in the United States and abroad. These forums enable policy makers, legislators, military officers, and members of the media, academia, and industry from diverse national and international settings to exchange ideas outside official channels and away from the often constraining diplomatic format. Institute conferences and workshops also provide a forum for leaders from the United States and abroad to make major policy announcements.

Institute meetings attract heads of state and government, foreign ministers, defense ministers, and key members of the U.S. Congress and overseas legislatures, along with senior representatives from the corporate community. IFPA activities have had the participation of, for example, the president and vice president of the United States, the secretaries of state and defense, the chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, the chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the assistant to the president for national security affairs, the director of central intelligence, the secretary-general of NATO, and numerous heads of overseas governments.

In order to ensure high-level participation in overseas forums, IFPA regularly develops its international events in collaboration with local institutions or policy organizations. Cosponsors of recent IFPA meetings have included:

  • The Defense Study Centre, Brussels
  • The Clingendael Institute of International Relations, The Hague
  • The Netherlands Atlantic Commission, The Hague
  • The Konstantinos G. Karamanlis Foundation, Greece
  • The Lillian Voudouris Foundation, Greece
  • The Kokkalis Foundation, Greece
  • The Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Europe
  • The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, United Arab Emirates
  • The Korean Research Institute for Strategy, Republic of Korea
  • The National Institute of Defense Studies, Tokyo
  • The Sejong Institute, Republic of Korea
  • The Center for International Studies and the Institute of East-West Studies at Yonsei University, Republic of Korea
  • The Institute of International Relations, Taiwan
  • The Industrial Research Institute, Japan
  • The Beijing Institute for International Strategic Studies
  • The Center for Strategic Studies, Brazil

Institute conferences have also benefited from the official sponsorship of the U.S. government and key intergovernmental groups such as NATO, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the Western European Union, the European Union, and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.
